Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's 2023 experiment with AI-generated answers at the top of search results. It evolved into AI Overviews, which Google rolled out widely in 2024, and later AI Mode. Businesses now optimize for those features rather than for SGE by name.

From SGE to AI Overviews and AI Mode
| Stage | What it was |
|---|---|
| SGE (2023) | Opt-in experiment in Search Labs |
| AI Overviews (2024 onward) | AI summaries shown to many users |
| AI Mode | A fuller conversational search experience |
What has not changed
Google states that the same foundational SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Helpful, accurate, crawlable content remains the base.
Our expert view
Searches for "SGE" are mostly people catching up with the change. The practical question today is how to be a source in AI Overviews and AI Mode, which is what we work on for clients.
Demand
In Google Keyword Planner (United States, retrieved 25 October 2026), "search generative experience" shows 100 to 1,000 monthly searches.
