Google AI Overviews SEO is the work of making your pages the sources Google draws on when it shows an AI summary above the results. Google says there are no special requirements beyond foundational SEO; the opportunity is to be the clear, trustworthy page the summary relies on.

What Google says
Google's documentation on AI features states that the same foundational SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements to appear in them. That is useful: there is no separate technical trick to learn.
What the click data shows
Pew Research Center followed 900 U.S. adults making 68,879 Google searches in March 2025: with an AI summary on the page, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. Ahrefs estimated a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page on keywords with an AI Overview in December 2025, a modeled figure. Being a source in the summary, and being worth clicking from it, now matters as much as ranking.
What we prioritize
| Priority | Why |
|---|---|
| Direct answers near the top | Easier to use as a source |
| Accurate, current facts with sources | Safer to summarize |
| Named authors and real expertise | Supports trust |
| Technically healthy pages | Must be crawlable and indexable to be used |
Our expert view
Do not rebuild your site around AI Overviews alone. Most of what helps here also helps classic rankings and AI assistants. See the AI Overview click gap.
