SEO is usually worth it for a small business when customers search before they buy and one new customer is worth more than a few hundred dollars. It is less worth it for businesses that win almost entirely on walk-in traffic or the lowest price. AI search makes the foundation more valuable, not less.

When SEO pays off
| Likely worth it | Less likely worth it |
|---|---|
| High-value services (roofing, legal, healthcare) | Very low-margin, price-only products |
| Customers search and compare before buying | Purely walk-in or impulse purchases |
| Local competition is beatable | You cannot invest for several months |
How AI search changes the picture
Pew Research Center followed 900 U.S. adults making 68,879 Google searches in March 2025: with an AI summary on the page, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. The click is less certain, but being named in the answer matters more, and the same foundation drives both.
A simple test
Estimate what one new customer is worth over a year, and how many extra customers a month would cover the cost. If the number is small, SEO is likely worth testing.
Our expert view
We would rather tell a business that SEO is not right for it than sell a plan that cannot pay off. Start with a free AI visibility audit and decide from your own data.

Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to start SEO?
No. Many local and niche markets remain under-optimized.
Is AI making SEO pointless?
No. Google says foundational SEO still applies to its AI features.
How do I measure whether it is worth it?
Track enquiries and revenue from organic and AI sources, not just rankings.
Limits and honest expectations
Search engines and AI assistants change their answers over time and no one controls them. Results vary by industry, city and competition, and we do not guarantee a position, a mention or a number of leads. We report what is measurable, plainly.
