SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO are four layers of one goal, being chosen when customers ask for help. SEO wins classic rankings, AEO wins the featured answer, GEO wins recommendations in AI assistants and AIO wins presence in Google AI Overviews. Unitrux builds all four together for U.S. businesses.

If your agency still reports rankings only, you are measuring the layer that is shrinking. This guide sets the four layers side by side so you can see what each one wins and what is probably missing from your plan.
The four layers at a glance
| Layer | What it wins you | Where customers see it |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | A strong position in classic listings and the map pack | Search results and maps |
| AEO | The short, trusted answer at the top of a search | Featured answers, voice assistants |
| GEO | Your name in recommendations from generative tools | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity |
| AIO | Presence inside AI Overviews | The summary box above listings |
Why the layers matter more together
Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords and estimated that, in December 2025, the top-ranking page on keywords with an AI Overview earned about 58% fewer clicks than it would have without one. Ahrefs' April 2025 study had found a 34.5% reduction, so the effect has grown. Ranking first is still valuable, but it is worth less on its own than it used to be, which is why a plan built only on SEO leaves money on the table.
Our expert view
In our view the layers are not competing budgets. They are one body of work seen from four angles. A page that answers a question clearly (AEO), carries evidence and consistent facts (GEO) and sits on a technically healthy site (SEO) is the same page that tends to earn a place in AI Overviews (AIO). Splitting them into separate projects usually creates four partial jobs instead of one finished one.
Which layer to start with
Start where the gap is largest. A business with weak technical health needs the SEO foundation first. A business that ranks well but is never quoted needs AEO. A business that customers love but assistants never name needs GEO. A visibility audit shows which one it is, and we scope the plan from that result.
What this means for your budget
Because the layers share the same underlying work, you do not need to buy four services. You need one plan that covers the foundation, answer-ready content, consistent signals and honest reporting. Our quotes separate every line item so you can see the cost of each part.

Frequently asked questions
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. Google says the same foundational SEO practices apply to its AI features, and strong SEO is the base the other layers build on.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO aims to be the answer a search engine quotes. GEO aims to be the business generative assistants name when asked for a recommendation.
Do I need all four?
The work overlaps, so we plan them together and start where your audit shows the biggest gap.
Limits and honest expectations
AI assistants and search engines change their answers over time and no one controls them. Results vary by industry, city and competition, and we do not guarantee a position or a number of leads. We show you what is measurable and report it plainly.
