Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content the answer that search engines, voice assistants and AI tools quote when someone asks a question. Instead of competing only for a ranking, AEO competes to be the short, trusted answer at the top.

Answers have replaced lists for many questions
Ask a voice assistant a question and you hear one answer, not ten links. Search engines increasingly behave the same way, with featured answers, "People also ask" boxes and AI Overviews. AEO is the discipline of being the source those answers come from.
AEO compared with SEO and GEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wins you | A ranking | The quoted answer | A recommendation in AI assistants |
| Typical query | "roof repair boise" | "how much does a roof repair cost?" | "who is the best roofer in Boise?" |
| Content that wins | Relevant, authoritative pages | Clear, accurate, attributable answers | Specific, consistent, evidenced business information |
Why it matters
Pew Research Center followed 900 U.S. adults making 68,879 Google searches in March 2025: with an AI summary on the page, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and only 1% clicked a link inside the summary.
Our expert view
In our view AEO rewards accuracy and clarity above everything else. A good answer is short, correct, sourced and written by someone the reader can trust. That is why AEO and the E-E-A-T principles Google describes (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness) fit together so naturally. See our AEO service page.

Answer engine optimization.

Limits and honest expectations
Search engines and AI assistants change their answers over time and no one controls them. Results vary by industry, city and competition, and we do not guarantee a position, a mention or a number of leads. We report what is measurable, plainly.
