When Vietnamese customers ask Google, ChatGPT or Gemini a question in Vietnamese, the answer draws mostly on Vietnamese-language sources: local websites, news sites, forums, Facebook pages, marketplaces and reviews. A foreign brand that only has an English website, or a machine-translated Vietnamese one, is often missing from those answers. To appear, you need real Vietnamese pages, a consistent local business presence and genuine Vietnamese reviews and mentions.

Many international companies enter Vietnam with a strong global brand and a website built for their home market. Then they discover that a Vietnamese buyer asking an AI assistant for "the best [product] for a small office in Ho Chi Minh City" gets a list of local brands and distributors, and their own name is not there. This guide explains why and what to do about it.
How Vietnamese customers search today
Google is the dominant search engine in Vietnam, with roughly 93% of searches according to StatCounter, so Google results and Google AI Overviews are the first answers most customers see. Báo Quốc tế reported on 30 October 2024 that AI Overviews were rolling out in Vietnam with support for Vietnamese. DataReportal counts 85.6 million internet users in Vietnam at the start of 2026, 84.2% of the population.
Customers also ask questions directly in ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants, and they continue to rely heavily on Facebook, Zalo and marketplaces for recommendations and contact. Coc Coc, a local browser and search engine, has a smaller share but is still used; see our guide to Coc Coc.
Why foreign brands go missing in Vietnamese answers
- Language. A question asked in Vietnamese tends to be answered from Vietnamese content. An English-only site gives the system little to quote.
- Poor translation. Machine-translated pages often use terms Vietnamese customers do not search for, or read awkwardly enough that they are unlikely to be quoted.
- No local entity. Without a Vietnamese business name, local address, local phone or Zalo contact, it is unclear whether the brand can actually serve customers in Vietnam.
- Distributors own the conversation. Local distributors, resellers and marketplaces write about your products in Vietnamese and get cited instead of you. That can be fine, if the information is accurate.
- Few Vietnamese reviews. Reviews written in other languages do little for Vietnamese answers.
What to build: a checklist for foreign brands
| Area | What to do | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vietnamese website section | Native-written Vietnamese pages for your main products or services, not word-for-word translation | Use the terms customers search for, checked against real search data |
| Answer-first content | Pages and FAQs that answer the questions Vietnamese buyers ask, including price factors, delivery, warranty and support in Vietnam | Questions differ from your home market |
| Local business facts | Vietnamese company or representative office name, address, phone, business hours, consistent everywhere | Use the current address format after Vietnam's 2025 administrative changes |
| Google Business Profile | Verified profile for your Vietnam office or showroom, if you have one | Customers and AI tools check it for basic facts |
| Zalo and Facebook | An active Zalo Official Account and Facebook page in Vietnamese, linked from your site | Many customers expect to contact businesses there |
| Distributors and partners | Give partners accurate Vietnamese product information and ask them to link to your official pages | Reduces errors that AI tools repeat |
| Reviews | Ask Vietnamese customers for honest reviews on Google and the platforms they use | Never buy or write reviews yourself |
| hreflang and structure | Separate URLs per language and correct hreflang tags | Google documents this in its guide to localized versions |
Our guide to website localization for Vietnam explains the language work in detail, and Zalo Official Account covers the messaging side.
English and Vietnamese AI answers are different markets
A foreign brand may already appear in English answers about its category worldwide. That does not carry over to Vietnamese answers. We recommend measuring both separately: ask the same questions in English and in Vietnamese, in Google, ChatGPT and Gemini, and compare who is named. The gap is often large, and it shows where to start.
A practical 90-day plan
- Weeks 1–2: measure. Build a set of 20–30 Vietnamese questions your buyers ask. Record answers in Google, ChatGPT and Gemini, and note which sources are cited.
- Weeks 3–6: fix the foundation. Publish native Vietnamese pages for your main offers, an "About us in Vietnam" page with local facts, and a Vietnamese FAQ. Align your Google Business Profile, Facebook and Zalo details.
- Weeks 7–10: build local signals. Work with distributors on accurate product pages, start a review programme, and pitch genuinely useful information to Vietnamese industry media.
- Weeks 11–13: re-measure and adjust. Repeat the same questions and compare. Expand the content that is being cited.

Frequently asked questions
Will an English website rank in Vietnam?
It can for English searches, and some Vietnamese professionals search in English. But most Vietnamese customers search and ask in Vietnamese, so an English-only site will miss most of that demand.
Can we use AI to translate our website into Vietnamese?
AI can produce a first draft, but a native Vietnamese writer who knows your industry should rewrite it. Terminology, tone and the questions customers ask are different, and awkward pages are less likely to be trusted or quoted.
Do we need a company in Vietnam to appear in Vietnamese AI answers?
Not strictly, but clear local facts help a lot: a Vietnamese address, phone, Zalo contact or an official distributor. Without them, assistants have little reason to recommend you for local buying questions.
Is Coc Coc important?
It has a much smaller share than Google, but some users rely on it. Good technical SEO and Vietnamese content usually serve both.
Can Unitrux help a foreign brand with Vietnamese AI visibility?
Yes. We are based in Ho Chi Minh City and work in English and Vietnamese. See our Vietnam market guides or contact us for a bilingual visibility audit.
Limits and honest expectations
AI answers vary by person, time and location, and no one controls them. Local competitors with years of Vietnamese content have an advantage that takes time to close. We do not guarantee a mention, a ranking or a number of leads.
